About This Site

The Art on Piano Registry records a numbered series of art installations on used pianos. The Art on Piano art project was created by Karen Earle Lile. The project joins the concept of art to a particular used piano, giving it a new name that includes its registry number and the original manufacturer’s name and serial number. Art on Piano art project is cultural arts and educational effort to empower owners/collectors to commission artists to create conceptual and visual art for their pianos without discontinuing the original musical purpose for which the piano was created at its place and time of origin. Owners/collectors are encouraged to keep track of the provenance of both art and piano in a book, file or digital record and to preserve/conserve and or restore the piano to the condition it was originally in when new.

Art on Piano relies upon piano technicians and/or restorers to physically examine the piano to determine the manufacturer of origin, year of origin and serial number assigned to it when it was created, if that information is visibly ascertainable. Once an Art on Piano registry number has been assigned to a specific used piano, it cannot be reassigned to another piano.

Art on Piano™ is a pending Trademark of Karen Earle Lile first used in commerce on December 18, 2018, International Class 041: Providing information in the field of art history.

Art on Piano is a conceptual art project that adds art to musical instruments that were not originally art objects and where the piano was produced by a manufacturing process. The project is in support of restorers and artisans and encourages preserving their history as part of the piano’s provenance. If a piano was created to be an art object at its inception or is a hand-made instrument, permission fron the artist and/or artisan is required for the piano to be included in the Art on Piano Art project.
